Hepatobiliary Surgery

Established in 1997, the Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery of Binzhou Medical University Hospital (BMUH) has now grown into a branch of general surgery with its unique style. It is a key discipline of Shandong province, one of the earliest Continuing Medical Education (CME) bases for clinical nutrition, one of the earliest training bases for minimally invasive technique practitioners, a national clinical medicine trial base and the diagnostic, educational and research center for complicated and acute hepatobiliary diseases in the Yellow River Delta. Owing to the co-efforts of generation by generation over nearly 20 years, the Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery now consists of 42 beds and an analysis room of nutritional components. It is currently staffed with 16 doctors and 21 nurses, among whom there are 2 professors and 4 associate professors. 6 doctors have received overseas training.

We are responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of liver diseases, cholelithiasis, biliary tumor, biliary congenital disease, pancreatic tumor, pancreatic inflammation and biliary pancreatic surgical disease. We have carried out a series of operations, including no blood liver resection operation, liver right three leaves resection operation, hepatic caudate lobectomy, radical resection of hilar cholangiocarcinoma, complex pancreatic duodenal resection operation, gallbladder cancer radical operation, bile pancreatic tumor resection, insulin tumor resection with joint vascular resection and reconstruction, and combined multiple organ resection. Using the hepatic round ligament to repair and reconstruct major abdominal vessels. Minimally invasive technique, offers patients appropriate treatment with less pain, fewer complications and rare mortality. We have performed laparoscopic liver resection, laparoscopic pleen-preserved distal pancreatectomy, laparoscopic splenectomy and pericardia vascular disconnection etc.

We started Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) early in China, with now all operations done with ERAS procedures (including Pancreaticoduodenal resection), instead of weeks and months of bed rest and limited activities, which was associated with the old methods of the operations, patients with endoscopic therapy and ERAS can now usually resume their normal activities in just a few hours after the procedures.

As a department of a teaching hospital, we have always attached great importance to teaching and research. We are training undergraduates, postgraduates and visiting doctors. Our team now focus on the research of hilar cholangiocaecinoma, hepatic carcinoma, pancreatic diseases and minimally invasive technique. We are undertaking 9 projects, some from the State Natural Science Foundation and Shandong Natural Science Foundation. In the past years, our staff have published more than 100 academic papers.
