Established in 1978, the Department of Respiratory of Binzhou Medical University Hospital (BMUH) has now grown into a branch with unique style. It is a clinical key specialty in Shandong province, a key discipline in the 10th -12th Five-Year-Planning Project of Shandong province, one of the earliest Continuing Medical Education (CME) bases for respiratory diseases in Shandong, a national clinical medicine trial base and the diagnostic, educational and research center for complicated and acute respiratory diseases in the Yellow River Delta. Owing to the co-efforts of generation by generation through four decades, the Department of Respiratory now consists of two wards (one for respiratory diseases and one respiratory ICU), one respiration & sleep study section, one endoscopy room and one pulmonary function laboratory. It is currently staffed with 26 doctors and 91 nurses, among whom there is 1 professor, 3 associate professors. 8 doctors have received overseas training.
Respiratory Medicine’s academic achievements have been extensively acknowledged at home and abroad. The academic leader of the department Prof. WANG Xiaozhi serves as a vice chairperson of the Respiratory Medicine Association of Shandong Province, vice chairperson of the Critical Care Medicine Association of Shandong Province, vice chairperson of the Critical Care Medicine Quality Management Center of Shandong Province, vice chairperson of the Respiratory Medicine Committee of Shandong Medical Association and vice chairperson of the Toxication and Occupational Disease Committee of Chinese Medical Association.
The Department of Respiratory has further strengthened its competitiveness through the establishment of subspecialties. So far, it has established 6 subspecialties: Infectious Pulmonary Disease, Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD), Lung Cancer and Intervention, Critical Respiratory Disease, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases (COPD) & Bronchial Asthma and Sleep Disease. Its annual outpatient visits have reached more than 22,000. It plays a leading role in Shandong province in carrying out systematic education and management of respiratory medicine, and it’s one of the earliest medical institutions conducting sleep study in Shandong. The pulmonary function laboratory is equipped with advanced lung function testing equipment including Impulse Oscillometry (IOS) and is able to test spirometry, diffusion functions, membrane diffusing capacity and conduct bronchodilation and bronchial provocation tests. The department has initiated the video bronchoscopy in an early stage. The ICU is equipped with a variety of large life-support instruments and advanced monitors, and more than 300 of severe patients are treated per year currently.
As a department of a teaching hospital, the Department has always attached great importance to teaching and research. We are training undergraduates, postgraduates and visiting doctors. Scientific research has always been a key mission for the department. It has focused on the research of sleep-disordered breathing, interstitial lung diseases (ILD), acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and lung infectious diseases. Some gratifying achievements have been made. Currently, different specific groups of our team are running nearly a score of ongoing scientific research projects.
