Geriatrics is a fledgling discipline in China. Since its foundation in 1996, the Department of Geriatrics at Binzhou Medical University Hospital has received great attention and support .

 

Now the Department of Geriatrics has grown into an innovative modern department with medical care, teaching, research and training well integrated. It wields important influence nationwide and stands for top-grade overall level in Shandong province. It is qualified to nurture master’s degree candidates in cardiology and gerontology.

 

We conduct comprehensive assessment for senile patients and aim to maintain and recover their functions at the greatest extent through prevention�� treatment and rehabilitation. We are the only comprehensive department that focuses on prevention��treatment and rehabilitation of geriatric diseases in northern Shandong. 

 

Currently, the department possesses 1 ward with 32 beds. It is staffed with 12 doctors and 18 nurses, among whom there are 3 professors and 2 associate professors. Dr. ZhANG Qingtan, the Director of Department of Geriatrics, has been engaged in clinical teaching and scientific research for over 20 years. He has rich clinical experience and deep understanding of cardiovascular diseases. As an outstanding professor, he has supervised 7 masters and was honored “Excellent Teacher of Binzhou Medical University”. Professor ZhANG also serves as a standing committee member of the Shandong Medical Doctor Association, standing committee member of the Geriatrics brand of Shandong Medical Association.

 

Our department is equipped with defibrillator, non-invasive ventilator, ECG monitor, Holter monitor, ambulatory blood pressure monitor, venous pressure therapy apparatus, bedside serum biochemical instrument, bedside X-ray radiography unit, peripheral blood glucometer and other advanced medical devices to meet the demands of senile patients.

 

We pay special attention to the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, nursing and recovery of cardiac and cerebrovascular diseases (hypertension, coronary heart disease, refractory heart failure, pulmonary embolism, hyperlipidemia, cerebral infarction, senile dementia, etc.), endocrinological, metabolic diseases (diabetes, thyroid disease, osteoporosis, etc), digestive diseases, respiratory diseases (COPD, bronchial asthma, pulmonary heart diseases, lung cancer, pulmonary infection and sleep disease) and other multi-systemic diseases in the elderly. We have conducted researches on comprehensive treatment (e.g. application of non-invasive ventilator) and regular follow-up for elderly patients with chronic heart failure. We succeeded in improving the living quality of patients, reducing palindromia of diseases and shortening hospital stay. In recent years, we applied interventional diagnosis and treatment to elderly patients with coronary heart disease with a recovery rate of 100%.
