Founded in 1977, the Department of Ophthalmology at Binzhou Medical University Hospital (BMUH) is a well-known eye institution that specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of complex medical and surgical eye disease in northern Shandong. With the co-efforts of generations, the Department of Ophthalmology has become the most important diagnostic, education and research center for eye diseases in the Yellow River Delta, a continuing medical education (CME) base for eye diseases and a key discipline construction unit of Shandong province. It has one inpatient ward, one outpatient clinic, one operating room for intraocular surgery, one laminar flow operation room for excimer laser surgery, one microsurgery training room, one optometry laboratory and one optometry center. It consists of a well-trained and highly-experienced team of ophthalmologists and optometrists, physician assistants, nurses, and technicians with a high sense of responsibility. 

 

Our department is a pioneer in many fields in Binzhou City: the first excimer laser operation (LASIK) of Binzhou, the first penetrating keratoplasty of Binzhou and the first cataract phacoemulsification surgery of Binzhou. It is currently staffed with 17 doctors and 14 nurses, among whom there are 4 professors and 2 associate professors. 1 doctor has achieved doctoral degree, 3 doctors are doctoral degree candidates, and 8 have achieved master's degrees. Dr. Zhang Lei is a visiting scholar at Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins in the US and Associate Professor Li Weiguo received fellowship training in Austria. We are equipped with a variety of advanced instruments for various ocular tests, including non-contact intelligent tonometer, auto-refractor, Heidelberg retina tomography, computercorneal endothelial microscope, computer automatic vision instruments, optical coherent fundus CT scanner(OCT), A/B ocular ultrasound, ultrasonic biomicroscopy (UBM), corneal topography. There are also many advanced surgical equipments, such as operating microscope, cataract ultrasonic emulsification system, vitrectomy instrument, retinal laser photocoagulation, Nd:YAG anterior segment laser treatment instrument. Our department is competent for the diagnosis and treatment of common and difficult ocular diseases. It serves over 400,000 outpatients and emergency patients, more than 4,000 inpatiens, and performed more than 2,000 surgeries annually. We are strengthening our competitiveness with the establishment of subspecialties: Cataract, Glaucoma, Retina, and Neuro-ophthalmology & Strabismus. Besides, cooperating with the Department of Pediatrics, we develop premature retinopathy screening by RetCam ��, and have made significant achievements in preventing low-vision of children.

 

Scientific research has always been a key mission of our department. We are concentrating on the research of primary open angle glaucoma (POAG), Grave’s ophthalmology (GO) and retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). We have made gratifying achievements in the study on the pathogenesis of POAG and its correlation with estrogen, etc. In recent years, the department has finished over 10 scientific research projects, many of which are province-level projects, and published more than 30 scientific research theses in academic journals.
