Pathology
The Department of Pathology at Binzhou Medical University is one of the largest pathology departments in the Yellow River Delta. Established in 1977, the Department of Pathology of Binzhou Medical University Hospital (BMUH) has now grown into the diagnostic, educational and research center of the Yellow River Delta. It is a key discipline Shandong province, a National Continuing Medical Education (CME) bases for pathology, the Pathological quality control center of Binzhou, and the Key laboratory of the molecular pathology in Binzhou.
Owing to the co-efforts of generation by generation through four decades, the Department of Pathology now consists of 17 working stations. It is currently staffed with 22 doctors and 14 technicians, among whom there are 3 professors and 7 associate professors. Eight members of its staff have achieved doctoral degrees, ten have achieved master’s degrees, and six have received overseas training.
The department has a tradition of integrating teaching, medical service, and research.
------Teaching
We are responsible for teaching all the pathology courses for undergraduates, postgraduates and international students. We also offers postgraduate program for anatomic and surgical pathology. More than twenty postgraduate students have graduated from our department. As Shandong’s pathologic training depot, we also train pathology residents, accepting pathology doctors coming from the Yellow River Delta for further study.
------Medical service
Our department offers a full range of diagnostic services including surgical pathology, cytopathology, autopsy and molecular pathology. Each year, over 30,000 surgical pathological reports and nearly 20,000 cytological reports are signed by our staff.
Our department is also the major pathology consultation center in the Yellow River Delta, receiving nearly 1000 cases for consultation from regional hospitals.
Our team of certified pathologists offers sub-specialization in Oral Pathology, Dermatopathology, Gastrointestinal Pathology, Renal Pathology, Hematopathology and Cytopathology. This wide range of sub-speicalization enables our division to diagnose a multitude of diseases and provide the physicians with the best information available to manage health care.
The pathologists present and support numerous interdepartmental specialty conferences and routinely Multiple Disciplinary Team (MDT).
Traditional histological techniques and modern facilities include frozen section, immunohistochemistry, image analysis, molecular biology and histochemical staining. Shared facilities in the hospital such as cell culture, electron microscopy, confocal microscopy and flow cytometry can be easily accessed by all those interested.
------Research
The researches have made a great progress in our department. Several grants have been obtained by our doctors in recent years. The research laboratories in the department provide a wide range of techniques utilized by both faculty and students.
The study of the department is focused on the molecular pathology. There are three branches involved in the disease of digestive system, urologic system and breast. In the last 3 years, ten papers have been indexed in SCI database and more than thirty Chinese papers have been published.
Led by Director WU Shuhua, our department has made great progress and become more and more famous in the pathologic field throughout Shandong province. Our department will carry forward the fine traditions of concerted struggle and being eager to progress. We will spare no efforts to scale the peaks in pathology.
