Established in 2009, the Department of Thyroid and Breast Surgery, is one of the Provincial key subjects of Shandong Province. It is a comprehensive, multidisciplinary breast and thyroid care program, offering a full spectrum of clinical and support services, from consultation, screening and diagnosis to treatment, research and thorough education for undergraduate and graduate students. It is a national clinical medicine trial base and the diagnostic, educational and research center for thyroid and breast diseases in the Yellow River Delta. Our department consists of two wards, with a staff of 17 breast and thyroid disease experts and 29 nurses, including 2 professors and 1 associate professor. 3 members of its staff have achieved doctoral degrees, 13 have achieved master's degrees, and 1 doctor has received overseas training.

 

Our academic achievements have been extensively acknowledged both at home and abroad. Professor YANG Zhenlin, director of the Thyroid and Breast Surgery Department, is a well-known expert with over 20 year’s outstanding work in the treatment and research of breast and thyroid diseases. He has been employed as a national branch member of Shanghai Jiaotong University and carried out two projects from National Natural Science Foundation and one project from Shandong Provincial Natural Science Foundation, through which many specialized medical professionals have been trained and educated. He also has been in the United States, Belgium, Switzerland and Korea for international academic exchanges, serves as a peer review expert of National natural science foundation, committee member of thyroid breast surgery branch of general surgery institute of Shandong province. 

 

The Department of Thyroid and Breast Surgery is equipped with modern breast diagnosis facilities, such as Doppler ultrasound machine and minimally invasive biopsy system. We have always applied the state-of-art concepts and progresses from international researches to the clinical fields and have established a combined treatment module for thyroid and breast malignancies, which is customized to the situation of local patients. The breast imaging diagnosis and interventional diagnosis procedures are done by our own team members, greatly improving diagnostic accuracy. For breast cancer, we insist that every patient should receive tailored, standardized, systemic and humanized treatment. Patients here will get all-in-one service including surgery, chemotherapy, endocrine therapy and molecular targeting therapy. With these efforts, encouraging improvements have been achieved. In the aspect of more challenging minimally invasive surgery, we have started standardized laparoscopic assisted thyroidectomy and breast reconstruction, being the earliest practitioners of this technique. So far, multiple goiter, thyroid adenoma and micro-carcinoma have been treated in this way and good results have been achieved.
