Orthopedic Trauma
 
Established in 2009, the Department of Orthopedic Trauma of Binzhou Medical University Hospital (BMUH) has now grown into a branch with its own unique style in clinical care, medical teaching, and research. It provides 42 hospital beds and twenty-four hour, seven day coverage accident and emergency services. It has more than 5,000 outpatient visits, 1,200 inpatient admissions, and more than 1,000 operations annually. In order to improve rehabilitation training, the department has been equipped with trauma treatment instruments, CPM machines, lower extremity air pressure therapeutic apparatus and multi-function traction beds.
 
It is currently staffed with 15 doctors and 18 nurses, among whom there is 1 professor and 2 associate professors. 3 members of its staff have achieved doctoral degrees, 12 have achieved master's degrees. Our department accepts fellows from all over Shandong province. Numerous fellows and interns undergo training here every year. In addition, our department supports doctors to go aboard to obtain additional time studying and researching. We often participate in international cooperation researches and clinical trials and are always looking for further opportunities to advance research in the areas of orthopaedics and trauma. So far 6 doctors have received overseas training.
 
Prof. ZHANG Kai is the director of Department of Orthopedic Trauma. Under the supervision of Prof. ZHANG, the Orthopedic Trauma Department continues to promote new ideas of fracture treatment while fulfilling their mission of providing excellence in patient care, teaching, and research as they will confidently move forward into the next 5 years. In addition, the nursing group has received many honorary titles such as Binzhou, Shandong and the national quality nursing demonstration ward.
 
Our primary clinical services provide encompass treatments for limb and pelvic trauma, and spinal injury with intramedullary nail, plate, locking plate and external fixator. In recent years, minimally invasive technique for the treatment of fractures has achieved good results. We have accumulated rich experience in the treatment of complicated fracture, malunion, nonunion, bone defect and osteomyelitis, large area skin and soft tissue defect, especially in limb salvage surgery by use of microsurgical technique, skin and soft tissue defect treatment by free flap transplantation, large bone defect, osteomyelitis and bone correcting treatment by Ilizarov technique. At the same time, we undertake the Shandong province and the national continuing education program to promote external technology. As the largest center in the Northern Shandong area in diagnosis and treatment of traumatic disease, our department has successfully launched a number of leading domestic technology, such as (1) severe multiple trauma treatment; (2) severe extremity injury of bone and joints, pelvic and acetabular fractures treatment; (3) treatment for fracture nonunion and osteonecrosis; (4) peripheral nerve injury, the skin flap and bone graft to repair tissue defect; (5) minimally invasive technique for the treatment of limb fracture; 6  treatment for spinal cord injury; (7) treatment for bone tuberculosis and suppurative infection; (8) diagnosis and treatment of abnormal motion system; (9) artificial joint replacement.
 
The Department of Orthopedic Trauma pays attention to the development of scientific research. Until now, it has received two grants from the Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), four grants from the Shandong Province Science Support Program. It has already published 5 monographs, more than 50 journal papers including seven SCI indexed papers. The Orthopedic Department also has routine training program to accept junior and senior doctors from other hospitals for academic and surgical skills training.
